What to expect.
Our first session will be centered around building therapeutic rapport. Your comfort and ease are most important. My hope is that you feel safe and connected so you can be yourself and heal.
We’ll talk about your reason(s) for seeking counseling, what’s coming up in your life, any background you want to share, and your goals for our time together. If you scheduled an art therapy session, art will be a part of this process. We can also talk about the various counseling tools I draw from in my practice and which ones interest you. Together, we’ll curate a plan to best suit you and your goals.
During the following sessions, we’ll dive deeper into what brought you to counseling. We’ll explore not only the content of what’s going on, but also how you’re responding to it and the meaning it has for you. Our work together may lead you to identify and process habitual thoughts & behaviors, unexamined core beliefs, and unresolved trauma responses stored in the body. If doing art therapy, your art will be the primary vehicle of exploration and processing.
Having a nonjudgmental outlet to process your thoughts and feelings can bring increased awareness. As awareness grows, connections and discoveries are made, which brings a sense of agency and choice with how you take care of yourself and move through life. At some point, you may also find yourself ready to explore new skills and practice incorporating them into your life. Perhaps you’re ready from day one. Often, therapy weaves back and forth between compassionate validation & support and learning new tools and applying them. Whatever your needs and goals, I’m here to support you in your process.
Some clients come into therapy to address a particular issue and discover there is more to explore. They want to go deeper and do the work to make lasting changes. This can mean we meet for 8 sessions, or more. Others come in to get support with a specific stressor and find relief after 2-3 sessions. Many clients prefer to check in once or twice a month for ongoing support. You’re unique and your therapy will be, too!
You may schedule a session through my website using the contact page, e-mail me, or call me directly. I offer evening and weekend appointments. If you have any questions, please reach out! I’m happy to talk with you and see if I might be a good fit for you and your process.
